SimpleMind Pro for Mac is a free download and serves as a mind-mapping, note-taking, and idea-capturing tool. It is one of the best mind mapping applications available, helping you organize your thoughts, retain information, and generate new ideas. We’ve developed a beautiful, intuitive app that lets you create mind maps anytime, anywhere. SimpleMind Pro is designed to synchronize your mind maps across different platforms; for instance, you can purchase it separately for Mac. I really love the app! One of my favorite features is that I can buy the software outright instead of having to pay for a subscription. I may be old school, but I remember when we could buy software instead of renting it. I wish more users would consider boycotting apps that require subscriptions. However, I do have one issue with SimpleMind: it does not support organic mind mapping. That said, it works excellently, allowing you to easily add pictures and drawings, and it syncs well across devices. Also, be sure to check out the Mind Mapping Tool for Mac!

Freestyle mind mapping is close, but it doesn’t allow words to flow along the lines as if you were drawing with a pen and paper. Instead, it uses the fishbone style. If you’re unfamiliar, you can refer to the book “Mind Mapping for Dummies.” SimpleMind for Mac is the only software I’ve found that supports organic mind mapping, but their subscription price is quite high. It would be great if you could update the app to allow for organic mind mapping because it really would enhance its already impressive capabilities.
I’ve been using mind maps for years to conduct research for work, and one issue I’ve consistently faced is a lack of flexibility in the tools available. The SimpleMind software I’ve used functioned essentially like graphical outlining. While it worked and allowed for some content rearrangement, moving branches around was not particularly easy. However, SimpleMind gets it right! With a long-press on any node, the app highlights all its subordinate nodes, allowing you to drag and drop the entire grouping to another branch. You can easily drag out handles to create new nodes or connections between nodes, and wrap nodes in an expandable border.
SimpleMind for Mac includes many excellent and well-designed features that I can’t list here. (I have no relationship with the developers; I’m just thrilled to have discovered this app.) Even better, the software is available for both iPad and Mac, and they work seamlessly together. For someone like me, who struggles with focus and organization, these apps have become indispensable. It’s hard to express how grateful I am to have found a tool that feels like an extension of my brain.
I also want to mention iThoughts because it’s equally good and has unique features that SimpleMind doesn’t, such as slideshows—an unexpected yet fantastic feature. iThoughts offers effortless free-form layouts and the ability to rotate or move branches around for better visibility and control. Personally, I prefer SimpleMind for creativity and brainstorming, while iThoughts excels in overall knowledge management.
